When Gimli first joined with the Fellowship, it was with a surly determination to fulfill his appointment as the Dwarven representative in the group. At first, he and Legolas did not always see eye to eye on the best path forward, each trying to best the other. After traveling with his companions and overcoming many challenges together, he found himself becoming fast friends with the elf. His combativeness turned to friendly competition as they fought battles side by side in The Return of the King, and in their later years, they were nigh inseparable companions. A true dwarf can see past differences to share victories, losses, and eternal bonds with their comrades, as the crossed axes in this design symbolize.
