Long ago, primordial spirits were seduced by the darkness, twisting their light into a scourge of fire cloaked in shadow whose malice knows no bounds. These towering creatures wield weapons of flame, fueled by an inner fiery turmoil of corruption and striking fear into the hearts of Men, Elves, Dwarves, and Orcs alike. The Balrog beneath Khazad-dûm, once unleashed, would be the beginning of the end of this once-mighty kingdom; the creature would again be awoken by the Fellowship's passage through the mines, pursuing the group through twist and turn, finally capturing Gandalf and dragging him into the depths much to everyone's despair. The ensuing battle between Istar and Balrog would prove to be the catalyst for Gandalf's metamorphosis, coming into his true powers to defeat an even greater darkness.
